Wesley Allen Seeley

Wesley Allen Seeley, the fifth child of Jesse and Prudence Brown Seeley, one of 15 children of which the youngest one, Charles of Mallet Creek, survives, was born in York Township, Medina county, January 11, 1835, and departed this life, January 4, 1929. Had he lived until next Friday, January 11, he would have been 94 years of age.

 

He spent his early years at home on his father's farm. In March 1858 at the age of 23 years he was married to Cordelia Depew, who died August 31, 1861. On April 27, 1861, he was mustered into service at Camp Chase, Ohio, being the second boy in Medina county to answer the first call by the president for 75,000 volunteers for the three months or during the war, joining Company K 8 Ohio Volunteer Infantry and was discharge from this service, August 18, 1861, re-enlisting in Company B. 42nd O. V. I. three months later and was transferred to Company K of the same regiment Sep. 15, 1864 and from this company was honorably discharged at Colombus, Dec. 2, 1864, ex-President James A. Garfield being his Colonel.

 

During its term of service his regiment bore an honorable part in the following battles: Middle Creek, Ky., Jan. 10, 1862; Arkansas Post, Ark., Jan. 11, 1863: Thopsons, Hill, Miss. (Port Gibson) May 1, 1863; Champion Hill, Miss., May 16, 1863; Big Black River, Miss., May 17, 1863; Vicksburg, Miss., (First Assault) May 19, 1863; Vicksburg, Miss., (Siege of) May 18 - July 4, 1863; Jackson, Miss., July 9-16, 1863; Opelonsas, La., Oct. 21, 1863.

 

On December 25, 1864, he was united in marriage with Lucy Ann Crosby who preceded him to the Great Beyond, June 23, 1913. To this union were born four children. Since the death of his wife in 1913 he has made his home with his son, M. T. Seeley. He is survived by his daughter, Mrs. Lora D. Knapp, two sons, Arthur V. and Mark T., 15 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, 1 great-grandchild and many friends. With the exception of two years he lived in Tennessee and two years in Wayne County, Ohio, his entire life was spent in Medina county, save the time he was in service of his country.
