Robert Wilder Codding
Robert Wilder Codding was born in Granger, Medina
County, Ohio, October 9, 1829, and died at his home
in Wellington, June 20, 1911. On February 21, 1856, he married Marietta Seeley. To this
union were born 11 children, five of whom died in infancy. The children
surviving are: Ida M. Spear, wife of William Spear, Issac
S. Codding of Wellington;
Erwin Codding of Penfield; Prudence M. Sutliff, wife of Fred Sutliff;
David Wilder Codding of Wellington; Sherman A. Codding of Medina
County.
The first 26 years of Mr. Codding's life were
spent with his parents at the old farm home in Granger. He continued to live
here for 12 years after his marriage, moving to Wellington
33 years ago. For the last 19 years he had made his home with his daughter,
Mrs. Sutliff. On Oct. 16, 1862, he enlisted in the Union army, and was
assigned to Co. G., 43rd O. V. I., Col. James A.
Garfield commanding. He took part in the battles of Chickasaw Bayou, Arkansas
Post, Thompson's Hill, Champion Hill, Black River, Vicksburg,
and other engagements, and was honorably discharged at Camp
Chase, Ohio, July 30, 1863, when his term of
service expired. He had a cheerful, happy disposition and a smile for everyone
he met. His home life was ideal, the husband and wife being spared to each
other thru over 55 years of wedded life.
