Descendants of Francis Mathews

FORWORD:

To the cousins, one and all, I dedicate this, my Final Report of the Mathews Family in America.
I was appointed, as a Committee, at our meeting
September 6, 1924, to trace and make a record of our families.
I now have the Record, authentic and completed, as copied from the records of the different families back to the birth of Jesse Mathews,
Jan. 20, 1777. Back of 1777 is tradition and the stories do not agree. I have spent a lot of time and done a lot of research work trying to verify those stories. I find the name of Mathew is very old, being mentioned in Roman and Hebrew history. I find the name Mathew, with variation of spelling, was in common use as early as the 10th century among the Dutch, English, Scotch, and Irish. Scotch and Irish families played a prominent role in the early settlement of the Virginians and Carolinas. At least sixteen different writers have written up the different Scotch and Irish Mathews families in America.
The Dutch and English Mathews families were early settlers of
New York, Pennsylvania, and Connecticut and a number of those families have been written of. The story of our ancestry came over in the Mayflower is a mistake after reading the History of the Mayflower. There was no name of Mathews in either the passenger list or crew.
It is a mistake that one of Herman Mathews' brothers went to
California with the forty-niners. Herman was the only one of the brothers to desert the old home town.
I think Uncle Ed's [Edward Folsom Mathews] story is probably the correct one: Francis Matthews was of a good English family with a good education but got mixed with the political trouble of
England at that time and came to the colonies in 1734 for his liberty and the good of his health. He maintained himself by teaching school, or tutoring as it was called in that day. He also farmed. He married soon after coming to the colonies and had two boys, Jesse and David Lester. The boys were married and had families. At the breaking out of the Revolution the boys joined the "Minute Men". Now I find in Volume V of the "Connecticut Soldiers and Sailors of the Revolution" just a brief statement.
Jesse Mathews,
Waterbury, Connecticut. Capt. Monson, Co L Inf.
David Lester Mathews,
Waterbury, Connecticut. Capt. Grant Co. Infantry. Entered service June 17, 1776. Discharged September 15, 1776.

David's services for his country consisted of ninety days. Both were in the battle of
Long Island August 27, 1776. "The Battle of Long Island was one of the disastrous battles for the colonies, over four hundred men being killed and wounded." (Copied from the battles of the Revolutionary War.)
David Lester was wounded in the knee which made him a cripple for life. Later, he and his son, Jesse, were cutting down a tree. The tree fell unexpectedly and David, being lame, was unable to get out of the way and was killed. Neither David or any of his family received any pay for his services in the Revolutionary War. This accident happened when Jesse was sixteen years old, or in 1793.
As to names, you boys that call yourselves Frank are out of line for no Englishman would ever name a son Frank, as a frank is a small piece of English money and to call a person Frank is the same as calling small change your name. It should be Francis.
The English spell the name Matthews with two t's. A number of the Matthews families were loyal to the King, so if you find a family using two T's, they trace back to Tory ancestry. Soon after the Revolutionary War the Rebel Mathews passed a rule to drop the one T. So if you find a family spelling the name Mathews, that family traces back to Rebel ancestry. We probably have a number of relations in the East as both Jesse and David had large families, according to tradition, but I have not been able to trace them.
Now if any of you want to join the "Sons or Daughters of the Revolution", you can do so, as you can find the record of David Lester's services in Volume No. 5 of "Soldiers and Sailors of Connecticut in the Revolution".

Notes for Herman Mathews:
Herman Mathews in 1863

Page 191

Herman Mathews (1804-1883) was the son of Jesse Mathews (1777-1822) and Abiah Bradley Mathews (1779-1871) of
Connecticut. At seventeen, he was apprenticed to a millwright, and later worked on the Eric Canal. Herman married Ann Lester (1804-1864), and they started west. He built mills in Michigan, Indiana, and Illinois as they went.
Herman and Ann Mathews reached
Iowa in 1838 and settled near the present town of West Point in Lee County. He built a saw mill on a creek there, but there was enough water for milling only in the spring, and the project was a financial failure. That first year was a disaster. Their grandson, Adolpheous Mathews, told the story this way:
"He raised a nice crop of wheat, got it all harvested and stacked. Upon arising one morning he found the fire had gone out and the flint and tinder used to start a fire with could not be found. This was before the invention of matches. He gave Francis a shovel and sent him across the field to borrow some fire. Francis coming back across the wheat stubble must have dropped a coal of fire, for when they came out after breakfast the whole stubble and stocks were burning. All that he had left was about five acres of sod corn and a small patch of buckwheat for his summer work . . . They had not been in their new home long before David, Henry, and Charles took down with scarlet fever. Charles never fully recovered from the effects of this scarlet fever. It left him deaf . . . "
Hiram Smith wanted a dam built at
Lowell, so Herman Mathews and his family arrived at Lowell in 1839 to build the dam and mill.
The Mathews children were Francis, Jesse, David, Henry Clay, Charles, Edward, Mary Ann, Hiram, Bradley, Elizabeth, and Herman.
In the spring of 1845, Herman Mathews bought a farm near
Danville, where he remained until his death in 1883. He and his sons at one time operated three pony saw mills - a circular saw driven by horse power, movable from place to place. He furnished part of the oak planks (at $12.50 per thousand board feet, delivered) for the Plank Road.

Francis Mathews married Almeda Patterson [Pattison]. Their youngest daughter was Lulu (1875-1960), who married George G. Miller (1872-1940). Their daughter was Almeda (Mrs. Ted) Whitham.

Jesse Mathews (1831-1918) bought a 300 acre farm in
Canaan Township about 1864. Mathews' farm had been burned over in a prairie fire. He fenced the land and built barns, living in Steamboat House, the old inn on the Drovers Trail built to look like a river boat. He replaced this with "the most commodious house in the township" in 1882 - "eleven rooms and three large halls," said the 1906 BIOGRAPHICAL REVIEW. Jesse Mathews married Caroline Patterson [Pattison] of Indiana in 1856, and their children were Wilfred, Adolpheous, Emerson, Juston, Ella, Fay, and Effa. Adolpheous and his cousin Birdie Mathews (1880-1974) compiled the book, "Francis Mathews Family in America 1734-1934," from which some of this information has been taken. Emerson's children were Guy, Perry, and Milo Mathews. Effa married John Chandler, and their daughter was Thelma Hileman. Ella's son, Clark Linch, was the father of Irma (Mrs. Virgil) Cooper.

David Mathews (1833-1919) married Emily Shaw Booth (1834-1905) and lived north of
Danville. Among their children was Perle Lester Mathews (1868-1909) who married Belle Ramsey (1878-1964), daughter of George and Irene Linn Ramsey; June (Mrs. Earl) Anderson, Roy, and Virgil (1908-1970) were their children.

Henry Clay Mathews (1835-1897) married Cyrene Dodds (1842-1933). Their children included Howard,
Warren, Willis, Birdie, and Fred. Grace (Mrs. Paul) Kellar was the daughter of Howard and Emma Gugeler Mathews. Birdie Mathews taught in Danville school for 47 years.

Mary Ann Mathews (1840-1926), who was the first white child born in the
village of Lowell, married James Robertson. Their children were Charles, James, and Clara. Charles Robertson (1863-1950) married Irene Holland (1875-1948) and their children were Lucille, Leland, and Cleo. James Robertson married Lora Brandmeyer (born 1883) and their children were Kenneth and Eugene. Clara Robertson (1877-1956) married Harry Hamilton (1872-1956) and their children were William, Lester, and Dorothy Ralston. Lester Hamilton is Des Moines County Supervisor.

Elizabeth Mathews (1845-1909) married George Marion Smith (1841-1904) and lived near
Mt. Union. Their children were Myra, James, Herman, Bert, Marion, and Noble.
